Maxwell Herath

Maxwell is an associate at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP in the firm’s Corporate Department, focusing on mergers and acquisitions and privacy and cybersecurity. Regarding privacy and cybersecurity, his practice aims to provide emerging and developing businesses with superiorly tailored and cost effective advice on data privacy concerns and compliance, reflecting the importance of data protection in today’s technological landscape for business of all sizes and budgets.

Before entering law school, Maxwell served in the U.S. Military as an Army Infantry Officer in both domestic and overseas locations, achieving the rank of Captain. This period of service equipped him with leadership skills that he now applies to his legal career.

While in law school at The Ohio State Moritz College of Law, Maxwell founded the Moritz Data Privacy & Cyber Security Organization with a mission to increase educational opportunities and access in data privacy. Under his leadership, the organization partnered with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) to offer students more affordable pricing for certifications. Furthermore, the organization successfully developed and implemented new practitioner-led privacy courses at Ohio State Moritz College of Law, which are still being taught today.

Maxwell currently serves as the Chair of the KnowledgeNet Columbus Chapter of the International Association of Privacy Professionals for the 2024-2026 term. His transition from military leadership, where he was dedicated to his fellow service members, to corporate and privacy law, where he focuses on serving his clients and colleagues, exemplifies his deep commitment to serving others.
